Rose Atuko, a mother of 7 in Ngora district, Uganda has ditched her 16-year-old marriage to Augustine Osupa for blind John Opio, raising eyebrows in her community. Osupa said: “I feel bad losing my wife to a blind man after producing 6 children with her during our
16-year-old marriage.”
Opio, who was summoned to Ngora Central Police Station, says he is willing to refund Osupa’s bride price to enable him marry his new catch. The deputy information minister for the Iteso Cultural Union, condemned the proposed union, saying Atuko should stick to Osupa. He said what the lovebirds had done is against Iteso cultural norms and called for Opio to be fined.
The chairman of the Irarak Imumwa clan to which Osupa belongs, however said they allowed Atuko to marry Opio. Atuko said: “Even if Opio is blind, my heart is with him because he is able to meet all my needs as a woman; unlike Osupa my former husband who is too old.”….. who can blame her for wanting a fine boy like Opio. Who no like better thing……
